All the Dirt: Planning your 2023 garden

Roanoke, Virginia (WFXR) — It may be mid-December, but did you know now is the time to start thinking about your spring and summer gardens?

Scott Baker of Bedford Virginia Cooperative Extension has all the information on planning your 2023 garden.

These are the top five questions every Baker should ask themselves.

  1. Where should I plant it in my garden? Think location, access to water, and sunlight. “All the Dirt” showcased an app that uses solar analysis to help you find the perfect spot for your garden.
  2. How big should my garden be? Consider how much space you have available to turn into a garden, or if you plan to use pots.
  3. What kind of plants do you want to grow next year? Ask yourself what you and your family like to eat and how you plan to use the harvest.
  4. How should I prepare my garden? Now is the time to prepare the soil. You can find out how to test your soil from our previous “all dirt” segment here.
  5. Seed selection: how much you need, where can you get seeds, do you need to use seeds or are you planning to buy seedlings?

You can get more helpful tips from the Virginia Cooperative Extension page on home gardening.
