Dare County Master Gardeners announces upcoming Winter Garden series


Interested in gardening? Here’s how to get rid of winter depression! Start planning your spring garden today with the Winter Library Garden Series, published by Dare County Master Gardeners of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension in collaboration with Dare County Libraries.

This year, all programs will be held Wednesdays at 11am, in person at the Kill Devil Hills Library, or online. Each presentation lasts approximately one hour and participants can choose to attend one or all of the programs of interest. In 2023, join us for many new programs never before offered, as well as some of the most popular topics of the last few years.

Please be careful: Whether you plan to attend in person or online, pre-registration is required.

“Plants to survive and thrive on the Outer Banks” – Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at 11:00 am

The 2023 Winter Garden series kicks off with a familiar topic: Plants that survive and thrive in the Outer Banks. However, this year’s program features an entirely new botanical selection. Dare County master gardeners have selected plants that thrive in the harsh conditions of the Outer Banks, including impatiens, black-eyed susans, shasta daisies, little bluestems, cast iron plants, Sharon roses and Hollywood junipers. Join us on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at 11:00 am for Plants to Survive and Flourish on the Outer Shores.

February 8, 2023 (Wednesday) 11:00 am “Breeding – Starting with seeds”

The basics and more to successfully start seeds in your home and make them thrive are covered in the all-new program Breeding – Start with Seeds. Join us in person or online on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at 11am.

“NON-NATIVE INVASIVE PLANTS – KNOW BEFORE YOU GROW!” – Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at 11:00 am

We are excited to introduce an all-new, never-before-seen program: Non-Native Invasive Plants – Know Before You Grow! Many exotic plants live here in the Outer Banks, but some have become very invasive and threaten native plants. This program will be offered on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at 11am will be

“OBX’Scaping” – Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at 11am

The all-new ‘OBX Scaping’ program covers a combination of methods that help reduce water use and enhance landscapes. As Outer Banks gardeners, we suffer from salty winds, sandy soils, heat and humidity, not to mention violent coastal storms. The performance is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am.

“Drought Tolerant Plants” – Wednesday March 16, 2023 at 11:00 am

The ‘Drought-Tolerant Plants’ program presents information about low-maintenance plants that require little water and how they add to any landscape. Especially here in the Outer Banks! This program provides information on many plants that are considered drought tolerant and add to any landscape. Please join us for “Dry Tolerant Plants” on Wednesday, March 12, 2023 at 11:00 am.

Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. “Firescaping for Your Home”

The 2023 Winter Garden series concludes with another new program, Firescaping for Your Home. Fires are a natural part of the southeastern landscape and occur all the time. The question is not whether wildfires will occur, but when. Can homeowners and communities be prepared when that happens? Learn more about what homeowners can do to reduce the risk of fires. “Firescaping for Your Home” will perform on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at 11am.

All of these presentations are courtesy of the Dare County Master Gardener Speaker Bureau, Cooperative Extension of North Carolina. Individuals planning to participate must pre-register to participate in these virtual programs by visiting DareNC.gov/Enrichment.

For virtual attendees, the program link will be emailed to registrants the day before the program is scheduled to take place. Please do not share the link with others.
