Do you speak to plants? I read an interesting article on this topic last year and saved it for later use. The dark foggy days of January are the perfect time to explore the benefits of plants in our lives.

In 2022, Trees.com conducted a survey of 1,250 people to find out how much they talk to plants.

48% of those surveyed reported talking to their trees and plants. Her one in five of those people talks to her plants every day. Houseplants were the most talked about at 80% of her, with outdoor plants at 62% and trees at 37%. Most importantly, 62% said talking to plants helps their mental health.

Conversely, 34% of those surveyed have never spoken to their plants and 18% have no plants to talk to. They miss you if you ask me. If you’ve never talked to a plant, even if it’s just yelling at a ragweed that forgot to mow, are you really living a fulfilling life?

The above findings may sound a little humorous or very humorous depending on how you answered the question. However, the benefits of incorporating plants into our lives are undeniable.

According to the National Initiative for Consumer Horticulture (NICH), houseplants at home stimulate both physiological and psychological relaxation responses. At work, it increases creativity and productivity, and increases job satisfaction. Remember that houseplants connect us with nature. This is especially important during the long winter months.

NICH also lists many benefits of outdoor plants. Just 5 minutes of “green” exercise (including gardening) can boost both your self-esteem and your mood. Gardening is good exercise. Moderate-intensity garden activity counts toward the 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention each week. Most importantly, gardeners tend to eat healthier foods.
