In honor of Florida Arbor Day, the Homosassa River Garden Club is giving away 500 free Red Mulberry seedlings. The event will begin on Saturday, January 21st at 9am and will continue until all trees have been distributed.
There are two locations with 250 saplings each. Publix Super Market at 3942 S. Suncoast Blvd., Springs Plaza, Homosassa.
Red mulberry is a medium to medium deciduous tree that grows 10 to 15 feet tall, 35 to 50 feet, rarely 70 feet, with a trunk diameter of up to 20 inches. It can live up to 125 years. The fruits are edible and sweet.

Today, mulberry is eaten raw, used in pastry fillings, fermented into wine, and used in marmalade, liqueurs, natural dyes, and cosmetics.
Red mulberry is tolerant of freezing temperatures and relatively tolerant of drought, pollution, and poor soil, while white mulberry is more hardy.
