Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden brings back the blues

DES MOINES, Iowa — It’s not Madison Square Garden, but the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden proved it could be a popular venue to see a concert this weekend.

The garden revived its Botanical Blues series on Sunday. In this series, blues musicians perform under a glass dome during the coldest months of the year.

Azur Christensen, Chief Advance Officer, Greater Des Moines Botanical Gardens, said:

The Garden has expanded its Botanical Blues schedule for 2023. Instead of him having one show a week, Garden has a series of shows on Sundays. First show at 1pm, encore at 3pm.

Hundreds of people turned out for the first concert of the season, Christensen said. Among them is Botanical Garden member Christina Her Durie, who said she has been attending her blues concerts for years.

“It’s a great way to get out of the snow,” Dury said. “When I first came in, I was blown away, like the first time I saw a Broadway show. You were like, ‘Wow, is this really supposed to be?

This year’s Botanical Blues runs through the end of March. Tickets are sold at the door only. $10 discount for Seniors, Military, and Children. Botanical Garden members and her children under the age of 3 are free.
