An American magazine specializing in Japanese gardens has chosen the garden of the Adachi Museum of Art as number one for 20 consecutive years.
every year, Sukiya Living, The US-based magazine called on experts from around the world to select 50 of the best Japanese gardens, including those of traditional Japanese inns and private residences, out of nearly 1,000 nominations. This project aims to evaluate Japanese gardens solely for their beauty and quality, regardless of size or prestige.
The top Japanese garden in 2022 is Adachi Museum of Art has ranked first for 20 consecutive years. In the garden of about 165,000 square meters surrounding the museum, Karesansui (Dry landscape) garden, moss garden, white gravel pine garden.
Takanori Adachi, director of the museum, commented on the 20th consecutive year of winning the top prize: “The first Yoshimitsu Adachi devoted the latter half of his life to gardening, based on the belief that ‘a garden is like a picture scroll.’ In addition, the gardener and all the staff of the museum work together throughout the year to maintain the garden without taking a single day off.

Kyoto’s Imperial Household Agency’s Katsura Imperial Villa garden has also won second place for 20 consecutive years. Other exclusive gardens included the Yamamoto Residence and South Building, a former private residence in Tokyo’s Katsushika Ward. ryokan Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture.
