Explore nature through the wonderful world of books. Share your favorite stories, picture books, and poems every Friday. Perfect for preschoolers and their parents.

Guided Tour: New Bromeliad & Island Ecology Gardens

Saturday, February 4th at 12:00pm / Free admission to the gardens

Get an inside view of our new Bromeliad and Island Ecology Gardens from the horticulturists who designed them. This guided tour by Sherman Horticulture Director Kyle Cheesborough and horticulturist Dylan Zoller will give you a better understanding of these new garden concepts and plant choices. Registration is required for this tour.

Craft Workshop: Valentine’s Day Bouquet Card & Rose Petal Bath Salts

Thursday, February 9 / 10am-12pm / $40 Members / $45 Non-Members

Join Alexandra Ito for a Valentine’s Day themed craft morning! In our first project, we’ll use the pressed flower card making technique to create a unique and lovely Valentine’s Day card. Next, combine a mixture of sea salt, flower petals, and scented flower her oil to create a fragrant bath her salt. End the class with a handmade valentine, a miniature work of art, and a gorgeous handcrafted bottle of bath salts. This fun and relaxing class takes place in an outdoor patio classroom by the gift shop where you can find inspiration in the beauty of the garden.

Friday, February 10 / 10am-12pm or 1pm-3pm / $35 members, $45 nonmembers

Learn how to see and paint colors and simple shapes with local artist Erna van Dijk. This month’s Elna is inspired by camellias. Classes are designed for painters and non-painters of all levels. Each participant can take home their own charming painting.

Family Art Class: Valentine Heart

Saturday, February 11 / 10:30 am – 11:30 am / $25 for members, $30 for non-members

Local artist Erna van Dijk will show you how to create cute artwork for Valentine’s Day. Make a heart shape out of clay using leaves and flowers to decorate your mini canvas. Working together, you’ll learn step-by-step techniques to create your own beautiful works of art. This fun and relaxing class takes place in an outdoor classroom before the garden opens.

Sherman Gardens is filled with unique plants, interesting exhibits and wildlife. Explore succulent gardens, fern caves, tropical botanical gardens and more with an expert docent tour guide. This family-friendly tour lasts about an hour and entrance to the gardens is free. Open to all ages.

Miniature Garden: Apple Teacup

Wednesday, February 15 / 10am – 12pm / $75 members, $85 nonmembers

Build a miniature Japanese garden in an apple-adorned teacup with Debra Mauzy-Melitz of the Orange Empire Bonsai Society. Accent your garden with portula caria aphra (aka elephant bush) and miniature her cranes. Debra provides growing tips for miniaturizing Portulacaria her aphra and explains the importance of vines and apples in Japanese history and culture. Along with better understanding and appreciating the culture of our Japanese friends, we leave with our own miniature garden in our teacup.

Demonstrations by international bonsai artists

February 19 (Sun) 11:00 am to 2:00 pm

Courtesy of the Orange Empire Bonsai Association. Stop by the Sherman Succulent Garden to see craft demonstrations by world-renowned bonsai artists. They work on many trees and can answer questions.
