Unique home and garden shop thriving in Ocean Beach

Lush plants fill the space at Botanica Home and Garden, a unique shop and garden center on Ocean Beach.

“I always grew up in New England woodland gardens,” said shopkeeper and co-founder Caitlin Brooks. “Being in nature has always been a big part of my life..it has always been fascinating to me.”

A true botanist, Brooks said he was looking for a greenhouse gig as a distraction from the lab while studying astrophysics at a university in Florida. After she moved to San Diego, she worked in nurseries such as Widener’s Gardens in Encinitas.

In 2014, Brooks launched a project called Coyote Creative, which became a regular at local markets in Ocean Beach and Los Angeles, selling plants, macrame, planters, and other plant accessories. The business was so successful that even larger ventures followed.

She and husband James Ellis White launched Botanica Home and Garden in 2017.

Located on 1909 Cable Street, the Ocean Beach store carries home decor, plants, ceramics, accessories and most recently, vintage clothing.

“We got a lot of traction[by doing a pop-up market]and jumped in and this big store space[it’s]been doing really well since then,” Brooks said.

A thriving outdoor garden center, this shop features a wide variety of plants from different parts of the world grown in California.

Succulents, houseplants, air plants, and cacti are all part of the store’s blooming inventory, as are striking species and varieties such as the Monstera Thai Constellation and the Pink Princess Philodendron.

The shop also features handmade products from the original ceramics lines of Anvil Metal and White.
